What is defensive driving?

On Behalf of | Apr 17, 2019 | Uncategorized

It is incumbent upon all Pennsylvania drivers to follow the rules of the road when driving. Additionally, you should also take extra steps to improve your driving and ensure safety, which is possible when adopting defensive driving techniques. Geico explains defensive driving and how you can incorporate it into your daily routine.

It can be easy to get distracted while driving. Even letting your mind stray from the task at hand can cause an accident if another driver makes a sudden and unexpected maneuver. Constantly scanning your surrounding allows you to react appropriately to a sudden road hazard or negligent driver. Along with checking your mirrors, also physically check your blind spots, which are areas around your car that you cannot see from your mirrors alone.

Limit other distractions where you can, especially texting and driving. Even changing the radio station or adjusting your GPS counts as a distraction, since it takes your focus off driving. Before setting out, make sure you are ready to go and your smartphone is tucked safely away and out of reach. Also, do not eat and drive, or carry on extended conversations with your passengers.

Lastly, leave some room between yourself and other vehicles. If you must brake suddenly, this will prevent a rear-end accident in the event the car in front of your stops short. Keep in mind that during bad weather, such as a rainstorm, your ability to brake will decrease due to slick roads. Tailgating, or following closely behind the vehicle in front of you, is not only annoying, but it can also greatly increase your risk of experiencing an accident.
